Having a dental emergency can be overwhelming, scary, and devastating. Emergencies require immediate treatment. The mouth is vulnerable to infection and injury. Either of these can lead to the need for immediate care.
What is an emergency dentist?
An emergency dentist can treat oral health emergencies. Sometimes, they allow walk-in patients. Most of them allow for same-day treatment when an emergency occurs. The point is to provide prompt dental care when it is needed. There are some times when immediate care is necessary, that’s when a trip to the emergency dentist is important.
Most Common Dental Emergencies
An emergency dentist can treat a wide variety of needs. In general, any oral health concern requiring immediate attention needs an emergency dentist who can provide the quickest care possible. There are a few dental emergencies that occur more frequently than others. Here are a few of the most common emergency services Dr. Corcoran provides:
- Chipped, cracked, or broken tooth
- Dental abscess
- Lost crown
- Lost filling
- Knocked-out teeth
What is classified as a dental emergency?
Every dental situation doesn’t get emergency status. So, how do you know when you can wait to be seen by your Eagle, Colorado dentist? And how do you know when to call him for an emergency? Here are a few questions you can ask yourself to help you determine.
- Are you experiencing severe pain? Severe pain and/or bleeding are signs of a true emergency.
- Did you lose a tooth? Getting fast treatment has the potential of saving a tooth.
- Do you have loose teeth? An adult should never lose a tooth. A loose tooth, even if it is not painful, is still a serious problem.
- Do you have an infection? A serious infection or an abscess can be a life-threatening condition. Treatment cannot wait. You may notice swelling in your gums or around your face.
- Are you bleeding from your mouth? This is a sign of a potential emergency.
Generally speaking, any dental problem that needs immediate treatment to alleviate severe pain, save a tooth, or stop bleeding is considered a dental emergency. If you or your loved one has any of these symptoms, call Dr. Corcoran’s office immediately, or go to the ER.
What are non-urgent dental emergencies?
A non-urgent dental emergency can often be scheduled for normal office hours. For example, if a filling falls out on a Saturday afternoon, you may be able to wait until Monday to have it replaced. Some non-urgent dental emergencies include:
- Lost filling
- Dull toothache
- Small chip or crack in a tooth
- Food lodged between your teeth
- Lost crown or bridge
- An exposed nerve
What To Do If You Are in Need of Emergency Dental Care
The first thing to do is to call Dr. Paul Corcoran. If the emergency occurs during normal office hours, they may be able to see you. Outside of normal business hours, make sure to get a message to your dentist, but you may also go to an emergency room or an urgent care facility, especially for serious mouth injuries.
How much does a dental emergency cost?
The price is going to vary depending on a number of factors. It may be more expensive if the emergency occurs outside regular hours. Pricing will also depend on what type of treatment is needed.
